Wrong way: Unsafe
Find out how this scenario can be made safer
Site description
This medium sized manufacturing company had several entrances to its site. The small west entrance had a sliding gate that was locked at night. Road markings indicated that a one-way system was in place but otherwise signage was poor.
The accident
A van driver attempting to deliver a consignment of glass arrived on site and not knowing the best route, went straight ahead. Finding his way blocked by a footbridge he was forced to reverse. As he rounded the corner he collided with a car coming the other way.
The consequences
The van driver suffered neck injuries from the collision, and claimed personal damages amounting to several thousand pounds. Also the glass broken in the accident caused thousands of pounds worth of cleaning costs, stock damage and disruption.
