Meter

My meter does not work. What should I do?

The majority of the meters found in the UK are not user-serviceable. Once simple checks have been undertaken (such as battery condition etc.) in line with the manufacturer's instructions, it is recommended that the manufacturer/supplier be contacted. Alternatively, HSL may be contacted for advice.

My meter is not calibrated by an accredited organisation. Will this affect the validity of the readings?

It is still possible to use the SAT with a non-calibrated roughness meter. However, this is not recommended as the production of spurious roughness information may lead to the production of inaccurate slip risk data by the SAT. If an uncalibrated meter is used, then a note will automatically be made on the results printout generated by the tool. Under normal circumstances, full calibration of the meter and the calibration foil supplied should be undertaken annually; the calibration check foil should be used to check the operation of the meter on a daily basis during periods of use.

My meter is generating 'over-range' readings. What should I do?

The generation of a small number of over-range readings is to be expected; the presence of scratches or grit on the test surface can easily lead to this. However, the prolonged or repeated generation of over-range readings would suggest that the test surface is unacceptably rough to allow the use of a roughness meter. If this is the case, it is suggested that the meter is not used on the surface under study.
