Using contractors

A brief guide

This core HSE leaflet is aimed at employers in businesses that use contractors. It gives advice on what to do to comply with health and safety law. It explains how to identify the job, select a suitable contractor, assess the risks of the work, provide information, instruction and training, consult with the workforce, manage and supervise the work, what to do to cooperate with the contractor and where responsibility lies. It also tells employers where to find more information. The leaflet contains a useful checklist, case studies and 'stop checks', which highlight important points and signpost the reader to other, relevant information.
