Sunbeds

In May 2009, HSE produced revised guidance for tanning salons and their customers about the safe operation of sunbeds.

The guidance applies to businesses in England, Wales and Scotland. It supports the Department of Health's Cancer Reform Strategy and provides recommendations about how to operate UV tanning equipment safely, including advice about potential hazards and risk assessments.

Operators in Scotland should note that the Public Health etc (Scotland) Act 2008 (Sunbed) Regulations 2009 came into force on 1 December 2009. This legislation will regulate the use of tanning equipment in Scotland. Scottish operators will need to consider these legal requirements over and above advice in the HSE guidance.

In revising its guidance, HSE consulted with a number of organisations between April and July 2008.

Further details on the background to the original consultation

The consultation ended on 17 July 2008.
