This information sheet discusses the use of chromate pigments in anti-corrosive primer paints and the health hazards associated with this.

Typically, the following are commonly used in primer paints: basic zinc chromate/alkali chromate; basic potassium zinc chromate; basic zinc chromate (zinc tetroxy chromate); strontium chromate; calcium chromate; and lead chromate.

This guidance will help dutyholders to identify who may be at risk from exposure, as well as occupational exposure limits and prevention and control methods. It also discusses the use of respiratory protective equipment (RPE) and the types of RPE suitable for work with the above. It goes on to discuss health surveillance techniques, information about training, maintenance and control measures.
