Reducing pump noise by good maintenance

The problem

Pump

While considering the implementation of a noise control programme, a major soft drinks manufacturer was advised that a pump used for transferring fruit juice concentrate from 200 litre drums to the product mixing tanks was producing A-weighted noise levels of 103 dB.

The solution

A preliminary inspection showed mechanical deterioration of the pump which required a complete overhaul to include:

  • rewinding the drive motor;
  • replacing the motor bearings;
  • checking and cleaning the pump bearings;
  • repacking the pump glands.

The cost

Nominal costs for staff time. (1995)

The result

A noise reduction of 27 dB.
