Fee-for-service Doctors

Summary
This OM gives details of an increase, effective from 1 April 2008, in the fees payable to fee-for-service doctors [FFS Doctors] for work undertaken at the request of the Employment Medical Advisory Service [EMAS].
Purpose
The circumstances in which FFS doctors may be requested to undertake work on behalf of EMAS were described in the EMAS Manual, Section PB.
As from 1 April 2008 the fees payable to FFS doctors for this work have been increased. Details of the increased fees are provided at the appendix.
Fee-for-service doctors should be advised of the increased rates and a photocopy of the appendix may be used for this purpose. Claims made by FFS doctors for work undertaken on or after 1 April 2008 should be checked to see if the correct rates have been inserted. If not, these should be amended accordingly.
Any arrears owing as a result of the increases should be claimed by FFS doctors on the next claim submitted. Such claims should be checked against previous records.
The EMAS Manual, Section PB, para 7, stated that FFS doctors must be 'experienced in occupational medicine'. The Director of Medical Services decided that, under a more meaningful and appropriate criterion, FFS doctors must hold either Associate of the Faculty of Medicine [AFOM] or Member of the Faculty of Medicine [MFOM] qualifications.

Fee-for-service doctors
Fees payable as from 1 April 2008
With effect from 1 April 2008, the hourly/sessional fees paid to fee-for-service doctors for work undertaken on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive [HSE] are as follows:
- For 1 hour - £86.70
- For 1 - 2 hours - £162.80
- For 2 - 3.5 hours - £230.00
Travel costs at public Transport Rate of motor mileage are payable to cover journeys made between the normal place of business [could be home] and the premises where the work is undertaken.
Travelling time is not reimbursed by HSE.
