Freedom of Information
The of Information (FOI) Act 2000 gives individuals the right of access to information held by public bodies. FOI applies to all public bodies including government departments, the police, local authorities, schools and hospitals/surgeries etc. The Act potentially gives you the right of access to all types of recorded information and is available to anyone without restrictions on nationality or geographical location or the age of the information.
Public bodies must tell applicants whether they hold the information sought. If they do hold it, they must provide the information to the applicant unless the information is subject to one of the exemptions in the act. Further information can be found on the Ministry of Justice website.
